The American Society of Home Inspectors is the largest and oldest professional association of home inspectors in North America.
ASHI has developed guidelines for inspectors to use when performing professional home inspections. They are known as the ASHI
Standards of Practice and are recognized and used by HUD, FHA and VA, the National Association of Realtors, national relocation
companies, and the United States legal system as the standards by which home inspections are to be performed.
The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) was formed in 1976 as a not for profit organization to build public awareness
of home inspection and to ensure technical and professional peformance of home inspectors. ASHI represents membership and the
profession as a whole in the areas of education, marketing and communications.
ASHI Standards of Practice
ASHI's Standards of Practice are the most widely accepted home inspection guidelines in use today. They include all of the homes
major systems and components, and what the home inspector is required and not required to inspect. ASHI Standards are recognized
by many authorities as the definitive standard for the professional performance of the home inspection industry.
The ASHI Standards of Practice guide home inspectors in the performance (of their work and) reflect information gained through
surveys of conditions and of consumers interests and concerns. Vigilance has elevated ASHI's Standards of Practice where today
they are the most widely accepted home inspection guidelines in use and are recognized by government and professional groups
as the definitive standard for professional performance.
